While 9-8-8 currently offers access through <\/span><b>text, phone, and Video Relay Service (VRS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>none of these meet the<\/b> <b>direct linguistic and cultural needs of Deaf Canadians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>fourth option must include direct video access in ASL and LSQ <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to ensure Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard-of-Hearing individuals can communicate immediately and equitably during a mental health crisis without relying on third-party interpretation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Quote<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDeaf Canadians must have the freedom to choose how we communicate in a crisis,\u201d said Lisa Anderson, Project Director: \u201cASL and LSQ are our first languages. In moments of trauma, no one should be forced to communicate through a third party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, the 988 Lifeline already includes direct videophone access for ASL users, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Canada has yet to offer the same level of accessible and equitable support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The petition outlines the need for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Direct access to ASL and LSQ crisis responders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> via video calls as a fourth option;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Training and employment of Deaf professionals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in mental health services;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nationwide mental health service expansion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beyond the current limited programs in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDirect communication is not a luxury \u2014 it\u2019s a lifeline,\u201d said Jeffrey Beatty, the DWCC Chairperson, supporting the initiative.
