Deaf Canadians Demand Direct Access to 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Line in ASL and LSQ<\/b><\/p>\n
May 6, 2025 \u2014 Ottawa, ON<\/b> \u2013 The <\/span>Deaf Wireless Canada Consultative Committee (DWCC)<\/b>, alongside the Deaf community of Canada including all Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing (DDBHH) Canadians, calls on the <\/span>Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)<\/b>, the <\/span>Government of Canada, <\/b>and the<\/span> Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) <\/b>\u00a0to immediately implement a <\/span>fourth access option<\/b> to the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline: direct video communication in American Sign Language (ASL) and Langue des Signes Qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise (LSQ).<\/span><\/p>\n A national petition launched today urges the federal government to close a critical service gap in Canada\u2019s mental health and suicide prevention response system. While 9-8-8 currently offers access through <\/span>text, phone, and Video Relay Service (VRS)<\/b>, <\/span>none of these meet the<\/b> direct linguistic and cultural needs of Deaf Canadians<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>fourth option must include direct video access in ASL and LSQ <\/b>to ensure Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard-of-Hearing individuals can communicate immediately and equitably during a mental health crisis without relying on third-party interpretation<\/span> \u201cDeaf Canadians must have the freedom to choose how we communicate in a crisis,\u201d said Lisa Anderson, Project Director: \u201cASL and LSQ are our first languages. In moments of trauma, no one should be forced to communicate through a third party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n In the United States, the 988 Lifeline already includes direct videophone access for ASL users, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Canada has yet to offer the same level of accessible and equitable support.<\/span><\/p>\n The petition outlines the need for:<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cDirect communication is not a luxury \u2014 it\u2019s a lifeline,\u201d said Jeffrey Beatty, the DWCC Chairperson, supporting the initiative.
